That diner window wore a coat of rain

You drew a crooked smile upon the pane

We shared the booth beside the coffee machine

And talked until the staff began to clean

I didn't know what years would bring

But I remember thinking just one thing

Alex, save me the last slice tonight

Make a wish beneath the diner light

Here's to every ordinary day

I'd choose again in the very same way

You leave your novels open on the chair

I learn the endings scattered everywhere

We argue over songs on every drive

Then sing the wrong words when the chorus arrives

No perfect speech, no grand display

Just all the things I mean but rarely say

Alex, save me the last slice tonight

Make a wish beneath the diner light

Here's to every ordinary day

I'd choose again in the very same way

If you want a quiet year, we'll take it slow

If you want a change, let's see where we can go

Your birthday wish doesn't have to be mine

I'll be beside you while you take your time

Alex, save me the last slice tonight

Happy birthday, hold that wish up tight

Here's to all the days we haven't seen

And one more coffee where it all began for me

Two forks resting on an empty plate

I still would stay until they close the place
